Activities for Boys
We have learned that boys are more apt to share their thoughts and feelings
with us while engaged in an activity -- but what to do? Here are some
of the ideas that other SOS members have had.
Sea Scout Programs
from SOS memeber, Catrin H.
My son is 14 and I am a single mom. We left his father when Nick was
7. I searched everywhere for some sort of continuing contact for my son
with other men and boys who are allowed to be boys. Nothing is available
here in Palo Alto, CA. No mentorship programs unless you are severely
at risk. What I did find was Sea Scouting -- in particular, the program
in Palo Alto. Their boat is in Redwood City and called The Intrepid! Although
Sea Scouting is a Boy Scout program, it is separate and run almost independently.
The Intrepid is the only Sea Scout boat that has a program that includes
boys as young as 12. These kids learn self-reliance, living skills, how
to develop themselves, and to develop self-esteem in a hundred different
ways. This boat has an incredibly dedicated group of adults affiliated
with it.

This program has made a big difference for my son.
